a sunday in toledo

Since a picture is worth a thousand words... and well I took one too many, I created this post a little different. I let the pictures do the talking and my captions fill in the gaps.

check it out!

Elizabeth, Lydia, and I jumped on a bus at the Plaza Eliptica bus stop. It was around 45 minutes to an hour bus ride to Toledo, and the tickets were seven euros... little did we know our metro cards got us on the bus for free (rolls eyes).

It's funny because in Spain, there will be a city, then the minute you are out of it there is nothing except rolling hills of green on the horizon.  The views were pretty incredible.

We got off the bus and started our ascend to the center of Toledo, we walked everywhere.  It was a gloomy Sunday, but in the nice kind of way.

Just Elizabeth and I sitting on an old stone structure.

Fun fact, Toledo used to be the capital of Spain explaining why its got a medieval vibe, and Madrid- relatively modern. Toledo was established as the capital in the middle of the 6th century. The streets are lined with antique stores full of swords and all kinds of clothing and objects you see in the movies Princess Bride and Romeo and Juliet.

Me, happy as can be, in my recently thrift store-picked Levi overalls (still don't know how I found these).

The Monastery of San Juan de los Reyes. Super cool, every religious architectural structure in Toledo has the most insane detail. It makes me wonder why we stopped placing importance in the little things, and making things last. I feel like our society is so focused on immediate results, that we stopped focusing on what goes into the process of things, the details, and the steps... leaving our foundations of life, buildings, and relationships to slowly but surely fall apart.

This was the main focus of the monastery, gold and bold. The art- dark, mysterious, and inviting, makes you sit back for a second and observe.

More viewssss... because look at those hills and orange rooftops!

Before lunch we stoped at a croquette bar, where they serve around twenty different kinds and smaller tapas. If you don't know what croquettes are, they are delicious mini corn dog looking things that are filled with mashed potatoes, cheese, and anything else you want like ham, chicken, spinach, truffles, breaded and fried. They are a famous dish in Spain. We each had two or three then made our way to lunch.

We stopped at a tapas restaurant around the Cathedral, because we wanted to stop there after. We found the restaurant on Yelp, it had good reviews, but it wasn't our favorite. The food was good but very Spanish, we weren't that hungry so we ate what we wanted, finished our drinks and paid.

The Toledo Cathedral, ohhh myyy  just look at it! The sun was coming out and the weather was perfect.

It was built in the 13th century... we listened to the recordings through our headset to the  electronic tour guide and walked around. It rehearsed the stories of the Cathedral's history. It was HUGE, filled with rooms, each with their own purpose and meaning.

I wish I could tell you the story of this piece of art but I would butcher it so I will leave this picture here. Look for the large angel holding a golden fish.

After a couple of hours of walking around Toledo we were tired and fulfilled with what we had seen, so we made our way back to the bus station, and left on the next bus out to Madrid. We all put in our earbuds and fell right asleep, cradled by the distant humming of the bus, and the setting sun.

Last weekend I celebrated an incredible birthday weekend in London with my girls... keep a look out for a London post coming soon.

XOXO,

Lauren.
